Fixing your Aopen CD-952E/TKU

I bought this drive very cheap, so I wasn't very surprised that after a few weeks the the tray wouldn't open and my cdrom got stuck inside. The Vendor didn't want to give me any warrenty and I started exploring what the failure could be.

I discovered that sometimes the gear attached to the electric motor missed some teeth of the gear that transmits movement to the sledge which holds the laser. A spring pushes the gear up to the gear of the electric motor. If only this spring would push harder, then it should be fixed. I've tried it and tested the drive with Nero CD speed succesfully. If you experience the problem above, try this solution (click to enlarge photo's):

Click to enlarge   This is the drive that needs a repair: Aopen CD-952E/TKU

Click to enlarge   First open the drive by removing the four screws at the bottom.

Click to enlarge   Look at the cables and where they are connected to. This can't be difficult :D

Click to enlarge   Disconnect the cables.

Click to enlarge   Remove the board. Put it away carefully.

Click to enlarge   These are the problem gears.

Click to enlarge   First we remove the electric motor, one screw...

Click to enlarge   ...and the other one.

Click to enlarge   Then we remove the screw of the gear we're going to adjust.

Click to enlarge   The spring is placed in the hole of the gear. We are going to shorten this hole. This reduces the room that the spring has, making the spring more forceful.

Click to enlarge   We need some scissors, tape and a candle in an aluminium holder.

Click to enlarge   First cut a tiny strip out of the aluminium holder. About 4 mm width and long enough to handle it.

Click to enlarge   Make a gash in the middle over the length of the strip.

Click to enlarge   Now fold the strip in its length. Ater folding the strip should be around 2 mm.

Click to enlarge   Bind the strip around something that has the diameter of the hole in de gear. I used a screw.

Click to enlarge   Cut the superfluous aluminium and use some tape to tie both ends together.

Click to enlarge   Put the little aluminium ring you create in the hole of the gear.

Click to enlarge   Put the gear with the aluminium ring back on the spring.

Click to enlarge   Screwdown the gear. Make sure the gear can move and didn't get stuck. Make sure you tighten the screw well. When it isn't screw down good, it will vibrate and get loose. Time to put back the other stuff we removed earlier :)
